Road sweeping and gulley clearing are essential, proactive maintenance activities designed to keep public and private road networks safe, clean, and free from the risks of flooding and environmental contamination. These two operations work in tandem as critical components of a comprehensive urban maintenance strategy, focusing on both the visible road surface and the unseen drainage infrastructure to maintain safety and environmental health.

Road Sweeping

Road sweeping is the systematic process of removing debris, litter, dust, leaves, and other materials from road surfaces and kerb areas using specialised mechanical or vacuum-equipped vehicles.

Process

Modern road sweepers use a combination of rotating brushes to dislodge debris and a powerful vacuum system to collect the material into a storage hopper. Water jets are often used during the process to suppress dust and aid collection.

Purpose

It ensures safe travel for motorists and pedestrians by removing hazardous materials that could cause accidents or vehicle damage. It also prevents a significant amount of debris from entering the drainage system in the first place, which is the first step in flood prevention.

Benefits

Safety

Reduces accident risks by ensuring a clear road surface.

Environmental

Prevents pollutants like oil residues, heavy metals, and general litter from entering stormwater drains and local waterways, protecting aquatic ecosystems and public health.

Aesthetics

Enhances the overall appearance of an area, which can positively impact property values and local economies.

Gully Clearing

Gulley clearing is the process of cleaning and emptying the small chambers (gullies or road drains) located at the edge of roads that collect surface water run-off. Gullies contain a trap or sump designed to catch silt, grit, and debris, preventing them from entering and blocking the main underground drainage pipes.

Process

A specialised tanker vehicle equipped with a powerful vacuum hose is used. The hose is inserted into the gully to suck out the accumulated water, silt, sludge, and debris. If connected pipes are blocked, high-pressure water jetting is used to dislodge and clear the obstruction. The collected waste is stored in the tanker and transported for safe, often recycled, disposal.

Purpose

The primary purpose is to ensure the continuous and unimpeded flow of surface water away from the road surface, especially during heavy rainfall.

Benefits

Flood Prevention

Prevents standing water and localised flooding on roads, which can cause significant property damage and road closures.

Infrastructure Protection

Prevents water from weakening the road's foundation, thereby extending the lifespan of the road surface and preventing costly repairs like potholes.

Hygiene

Eliminates stagnant water and decaying debris, which can be breeding grounds for bacteria and pests.
